The crest and motto are those of Pollock or Pollok. The name “Valleyfield “ inscribed underneath probably refers to Valleyfield House, co. Fife, which was developed by Robert Preston, who engaged Humphrey Repton to lay out the grounds in 1801. This is the only known example of his work in Scotland. The house was demolished in 1941.

A similar tureen, but with boar’s heads and ram’s head instead of lions on the feet, by Archambo was sold Replica Shoes ’s London, Earth to Fire, May 4, 2017, lot 201. The eagle finial appears on a tureen by Paul de Lamerie 1747, sold Christie’s London, November 27, 2012, lot 775. Later versions of the current tureen, with stands, were made by Garrard 1809/10, sold Replica Shoes Parke Bernet, 10 June 1975, lot 499 and Christie’s London, 29 June 1955, lot 124.
