Description
each moulded with indentations to the upper part, comprising: two with bands of iron-red flowers or trelliswork to the upper section and quayside scenes painted below; one painted with figures in a landscape within shaped gilt-edged quatrefoil cartouches on a turquoise-ground, scalloped rim; one painted en camaïeu purple with figures hunting in a forest landscape, the top with a turquoise-ground medallion with trellis; and one painted with a continuous scene of figures in landscape, the top painted with a single violet flower, all with richly gilt interiors,
each 1.8 cm; ¾ in. high approx.
Cranfield University used non-invasive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for this lot to screen the green enamel for chromium, which was detected on two examples, a result consistent with later manufacture; on the remaining example there was no green enamel to test.
