The design of the present commode is evidently inspired from the oeuvre of the French 18th century ébéniste Jean-Henri Riesener who had an important influence on the production of many cabinetmakers in the second half of the 19th century.

This commode particularly draws inspiration from three models by Riesener: from the suite of furniture pieces including an encoignure in the Wallace collects ion, London (inv. no. F275), from the commode supplied to Marie-Antoinette in 1780 in the Wallace collects ion, London (inv. no. F247) and finally from the commode supplied to Marie-Antoinette in 1782 in the Louvre Museum, Paris (inv. no. OA12012).
