“This work deals with about 365 species and subspecies of the Tunisian avifauna. Most of the descriptions are based on specimens in the author’s own collects ion” (Anker). 


Joseph Isaac Spadafora Whittaker (1850-1936) was a Sicilian-English ornithologist and archeologist. A member of the British Ornithologists' Union, and founder of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at Palermo, he was a keen ornithologist, recording and investigating birds throughout his career, and publishing numerous works on the subject, of which this impressive publication on the birds of Tunisia is his most notable.
