Description

A Roman Marble Torso of a Young Deity

circa 2nd Century A.D.

probably Dionysos, standing with the weight on his right leg, his right arm formerly lowered, his left arm extended perhaps to embrace a lost companion figure, the remains of this figure or of an associated attribute on his left side originally extending across part of the abdomen, the missing head and arms repaired in antiquity.

Height 90 cm.

European private collection, circa early 20th Century (based on stepped coloured marble base illustrated in 1983 sale catalogue)

Robin Symes, London

Sotheby's, New York, June 10th, 1983, no. 93, illus.

Edith ("Edie") Soeiro, New York and Santa Fe

acquired by the present owner from the above in 2001

Other Roman copies of the same type are in Geneva (J. Chamay and J.-L. Maier, Sculptures en pierre du Musée de Genève. Art romain, 1989, p. 62, no. 79, pl. 82) and in the Vatican Museums (Chr. Vorster, Museo Gregoriano Profano. Katalog der Skulpturen, vol. II.2, 2004, p. 63f., no. 29, pl. 40,2: arachne.dainst.org/entity/1081552). The lack of pubic hair and soft modelling of the body suggest Dionysos as the subject. His companion figure could have been a satyr, as in a group of Dionysos and a satyr from Miletus in Berlin: https://arachne.dainst.org/entity/18446.
