The Belgian-born artist Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merprés was enchanted by the unsullied beauty he found in Bali during his first visit in 1929. Inspired by ‘everything in this little paradise’, the painter decided to migrate to the sun-kissed island in 1932. Within three years of living there, he married one of his young Balinese muses, the exquisite Legong dancer Ni Wayan Pollok Tjoeglik. Depictions of Balinese life and women – predominantly those of Ni Pollok – are arguably some of the artist’s most distinctive and signature works.

The present lot, Portrait of Ni Pollock and a Companion, is a charming example from Le Mayeur’s oeuvre as it displays his flair for depicting the female anatomy. The body language of the two figures, each inclining towards the other, invites the viewer to lean in closer, ultimately creating a more intimate experience. One sees through the eyes of the artist and garners feelings of admiration for the women, who are so in tune with their culture and natural milieu as they work on their weaving.
