Jean-Louis Richter (1766-1841), along with Jean-Francois-Victor Dupont, and Jean-Abraham Lissignol, was the best enamel painter in Geneva at the turn of the 18th and the 19th Centuries.
The present scene is unusual for Richter in that it is a departure from the area he specialised in which was normally landscapes, particularly lakesides and seascapes and often sea battles. This example was possibly influenced by Lissignol, who painted people in this style with a romantic foggy tone in faded backgrounds, while Richter is characterised by clear, detailed backgrounds. What points to Richter is the masterly representation of the dynamic of the couple, as well as their faces which are childish in appearance, a typical characteristic of Richter's faces.
This watch is a collaboration of three of the most important artists who are known for the highest quality watches made for the Chinese market. The attribution to Bovet is based on the 'B' stamped inside the case. This particular mark, which is found in two forms, is seen only in Bovet and Geneva watches sold by London retailers such as Ilbery or Just. A watch in the Bovet museum bears the same mark (No. 526). In the Musée de L'Horlogerie et de l'emaillerie, there also exists a Bovet watch with the mirror image of this same scene (inv.M910) which Dr. Hans Boeckh attributed to Richter in terms of the enamel. In the Patek Philippe museum there is an Ilbery watch with the preceding serial number, 6212. It is identical in terms of form of case, dial and movement; the museum dates it between 1812-1820.
