Condition
The censer has two rim cracks, the longer one merging into one of the decorative 'cracks' and age consistent surface wear to the rim and the interior. The glaze is slightly uneven and pools more thickly around the upper half of the bowl.

The Rev. Dr. James M. Menzies (1885-1957), known as 'Ming Yishi' in China,
is best remembered as one of the earliest scholars dedicated to collects ing and deciphering the famous 'oracle bones' of the Shang dynasty. He amassed a big collects ion of the early form of divination, most of them now in the Royal Ontario Museum but some remain in China. Apart from collects ing 'oracle bones', Dr. Menzies also had other antiquities in his collects ion. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on bronze weapons.
