Despite being one of the world’s biggest sporting competitions, Wimbledon is also a huge day in the fashion calendar.

With A-list celebrities, politicians, and even royalty all in attendance at the London tennis tournament each year (yep, you might even see Kate Middleton or Meghan Markle), it’s no surprise that there are a few written (and unwritten) rules about what to wear.

What not to wear to Wimbledon

Although there’s no strict dress code, it’s generally advised that attendees wear ‘smart casual’ clothing. So, this means no ripped jeans, sports/gym gear or items with large slogans or logos.

Other items to avoid: running vests, sport shorts and dirty trainers.

Oh, and large hats are an unwritten faux pas as they can block the view for other spectators.

Is there a dress code to attend Wimbledon?

Right, now we’ve covered what not to wear, let’s dive a little deeper into what smart casual could look like.

While this particular dress code could mean a million and one things, I’d suggest opting for something you’d pick out for a summer wedding or garden party.

But back to Wimbledon. Smart casual could range from a lightweight summer dress, to a tailored linen suit, all the way to your favourite printed jumpsuit. Don’t worry, you’ve got plenty of options!

As Wimbledon takes place at the height of British summer (this year, it’s happening in July), you also need to make sure that your outfit will keep you both cool and comfy. Pieces like blouses, shirts, linen dresses and lighter coloured items are all a safe bet for watching the likes of Serena Williams centre court.

Can you wear prints to Wimbledon?

If your style is more on the maximalist side and the thought of wearing a neutral-coloured dress is not your vibe, you can still opt for prints like florals, polka dot and stripes.

Plus, you can also show off your personal style with the help of accessories, for example a good pair of sunnies and some statement jewellery.

What shoes can I wear to Wimbledon?

Smart heeled sandals are a safe bet, but you’re going to be on your feet for longer than you think. Bring a pair of flat sandals or smart trainers (remember: not dirty) to change into when your feet get sore, and you’ll thank yourself later.
