Is there a dress code for Cheltenham races?
No. The Jockey Club announced it was scrapping a formal dress code at all its venues in 2023 in an attempt to make racing more inclusive and accessible. The official advice advises to come โdressed to feel your bestโ. This might be a dress and heels, or jeans and trainers.
While pretty much anything goes, The Jockey Club advise to avoid wearing anything โinappropriate or offensiveโ. Anything deemed โvulgar or derogatoryโ might lead to you being refused entry.
Can you wear ripped jeans to Cheltenham races?
Yep. As there is no dress code, you can wear whatever you like to the Cheltenham races (within reason) โ and this includes ripped jeans.
What to wear to Cheltenham Festival in March 2024
Cheltenham has its own unique style that differs to other racing events that take place in the UK. Based in the Cotswolds, itโs all about smart country wear, which makes it the perfect opportunity to embrace country glamour.
Consider the weather
As the races take place in March itโs almost guaranteed that it will be chilly and weโre never safe from the rain, so chances are youโll have your coat on for the majority of the day. The weather is scheduled to rain throughout the week, so make sure you pack an umbrella. Your outerwear will be your fashion priority too. Avoid faux fur and opt for more practical options to ensure youโre not cold and wet all day.
Consider texture, print and fabric
The golden rule is to ensure youโre wearing some combination including at least one of the following: tweed, tartan, houndstooth, feathers and fur. Other fabric favourites include colour block wool, leather and suede. If I were you, Iโd stick to the latter โ especially due to the weather!
Wear comfy shoes
Comfortable shoes are a must too as youโll be on your feet all day, and chances are youโll be standing on grass at some point so this is no place for a high heel. We recommend boots with a chunky heel or even flats for optimum comfort for the day.
Consider trousers
While it was previously recommended you wear a cocktail dress, trousers can look just as chic as dresses (especially under a long coat), and jumpsuits are also another great option to stay warm and look great while doing so. As well as keeping warm, these often look more comfortable than a tight dress.
Add a hat
Although hats are not required, itโs a perfect way to complete your racing day outfit. Colourful berets, felt fedoras and faux fur hats will ensure you look stylish and remain cosy all day. Plus, theyโll protect your hair from the wind and rain.

What not to wear to Cheltenham Festival in March 2024
As we know, you can wear pretty much whatever you like to the races but youโre advised not to wear anything offensive, vulgar or inappropriate as you might not be allowed in. While itโs not clear what could be seen as offensive, itโs recommended to avoid slogan tees with offensive language, nudity or overly revealing outfits or fancy dress.
Stick to tried and tested outfit combinations, some of which youโll see below โ but donโt be afraid to experiment with your style either.
