Is it Acceptable to Wear Pyjamas in Public?
PJs have never looked so good.
You’ve probably always avoided wearing your pyjamas out in public, but believe it or not nightwear as partywear is fast becoming one of fashion’s most coveted looks.
I had this question thrown at me on my birthday last month, when I threw on my Sleeper pyjamas to wear out for dinner. My boyfriend took one look at me and said, ‘You look like you’re wearing pyjamas!’

‘They are pyjamas,’ I replied. ‘But they have feathers on I can’t wear these to bed!’
Thanks to luxury sleepwear brands such as Sleeper, Rixo and Olivia Von Halle designing ‘party PJs’ in luxurious silks and velvets, complete with feather trims and flared legs, PJs have never been so acceptable to wear out of the house.
The pandemic made us appreciate our loungewear more than ever, but why leave it at sweatpants? We’ve now got a new-found love of PJs, and they’re no longer basics.
Of course, the way they’re styled is often what makes them look so good. If you want to wear slippers with your nightwear and style it out at home, go for it but if you’re planning to wear PJs out of the house, it’s all about what you wear with them to give them that extra oomph.
Simply adding a pair of heels is an easy way to dress up your pyjamas, as evidenced by influencers Francesca Saffari, Megan Ellaby, Hanni Treweek and many, many more who’ve joined the pyjama parade but you can also add glitzy bags, statement jewellery or layers to the look.
Look to Rachel Clifton and Sara Waiste for inspiration when it comes to a more casual vibe. Rachel wears hers under a blazer, while Sara adds a sweater vest for a daytime look.
However you wear yours, it’s true it’s definitely OK to wear PJs out of the house in 2022. In fact, it’s encouraged.
