Swimsuits You Can Actually Swim in Without Any Accidents

No wardrobe malfunctions here.

In 2023, I’ve decided to level up my swimming.

I’m not a complete newbie. I’ve been swimming a couple of times a week over the past year (when COVID has allowed), but my swimwear choices have left a lot to be desired.

At one point I wore a bikini top with cute little cap sleeves that dug into my arms so much that it left me with angry scabs the next day, while another highlight was the broken swimsuit I realised my puppy had chewed on the bum area after I left the swimming pool. I’d left it out to dry in the garden…never again.

Just like sports bras and decent leggings, well-fitting and supportive swimwear is a necessity if you’re planning to get some laps in at the pool. Skimpy bikinis and cut-out one pieces won’t cut it, I’m sad to say.

Luckily there are plenty of cute but practical swimsuit options out there from all the heavy hitters, including Billabong, Sweaty Betty and Lululemon. If you’re on a budget, Slazenger has an unbelievably good deal on a basic swimsuit for just £11, while ASOS is another good option.

What to look for when shopping for a swimsuit

So what should you look for when looking for swimsuits you can actually wear swimming?

Firstly and perhaps most importantly, your swimwear should offer support. Whether you’re big or small-busted, it’s vital that your swimsuit keeps you in place. Look for high necks, cups and/or padding.

If you’re planning to swim a lot, look for chlorine-resistant material. The chlorine in pools will damage the spandex of your suit over time, which explains the sagging suit after a holiday.

I’ve included a couple of one pieces made of chlorine-fighting fabrics, including this classic 3-stripe option from Adidas and this black one piece from Speedo.

Extra details to look out for include a fully-lined swimsuit, which prevents your swimwear going see through when it’s wet, racer back straps for maximum movement and high necks to keep you feeling comfortable and supported.
