Low-rise jeans are well and truly back.

Denim has been a contentious issue amongst millennials over the past year. Gen Zers decided that skinny jeans were out and baggy, slouchy and low-rise denim was back in.

According to Lyst, searches for low-rise jeans have jumped 91% in the past six months, with baggy and flared being the most popular styles.

Meanwhile denim with prints such as checkerboard, floral and wavy patterns has grown in popularity too, with searches for printed denim increasing by 67%, while searches for patchwork denim is up 112%.

These throwback styles were hugely popular in the early noughties amongst celebrities such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, but they were notoriously hard to wear.

The reemergence of low slung jeans for many brings back the feeling of being ‘too big’ to wear them. At the time, they came with a requirement of jutting hipbones and a flat stomach, and if you didn’t have them, they were off limits.

Now stars including Rihanna, Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa seem adamant on bringing them back, but fortunately we’re now in 2021 and things have started to change.

Many articles have been written by women claiming they no longer care about the rulebook. Instead of teaming them with a crop top, they’ll opt for longer sweaters and blouses this time around.

Of course you can wear them with crop tops if you want to, but it’s not a requirement. Instead teaming your low slung denim with a sweatshirt or jumper will look effortless.
