Museum Berggruen

Berlin | Germany

Pioneering modernists, especially Picasso and Klee

The Museum Berggruen is one of the most important museums of modern art in Berlin. It first opened to the public in 1996 and displayed an impressive collects ion of works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Paul Klee and Alberto Giacometti. The museum owes its name and genesis to the art dealer and collects or Heinz Berggruen (1914-2007), one of Paris’s leading gallerists, particularly in prints and drawings by Picasso. Berggruen's private collects ion constitutes the majority of the museum’s holdings, notably with more than 120 works by Picasso, 70 works by Klee and a collects ion of African sculptures that inspired many European modernists. The Museum Berggruen is currently closed for major renovations and the collects ion is on an international tour. The reopening is planned for 2025.
