3000 years ago, Chinese emperors sought guidance from the Gods by inscribing oracles on animal bones – these artifacts became known as Oracle Bones. Drawing inspiration from the ancient Chinese objects that his father meticulously collected, Zao Wou-Ki created the ‘Oracle Bone’ series. In this episode of Expert Voices, Replica Shoes ’s Vinci Chang, Head of Modern Asian Art, discusses how Zao Wou-Ki synthesizes distinct Eastern brushstrokes with abstract Western motifs to unite artistic traditions. A masterwork from this series, Untitled, 1958 comes directly from the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
