The Little Gothic Bridge that Inspired Feininger’s Cubist Masterpiece

LONDON | 26 FEBRUARY

Discover how a small Gothic bridge near Weimar, Germany provided Bauhaus pioneer Lyonel Feininger with one of his most iconic motifs. In the peace and quiet of the countryside, away from the crisis of the modern world, Feininger found a subject that finally satisfied his yearning for tranquillity and harmony. Feininger’s fragmented Cubist style gives the small bridge a sense of majestic splendour but the depiction of figures adds an emotional and somewhat comical element absent from his Cubist colleagues working in Paris. ‘Brücke II (Bridge II)’ is a highlight of our upcoming Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale (26 February | London).
