Sotheby's Classic Photographs and Contemporary Photographs auctions in New York present a selection of works by the most significant names in photography. Classic Photographs showcases fine examples from the 19th and early 20th centuries by Carleton Watkins, Edward Curtis, Alfred Stieglitz, and Paul Strand, which complement a selection of important mid-century works by Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Robert Frank, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Contemporary Photographs auction in New York showcases significant works by Wolfgang Tillmans, Bruce Nauman, Peter Lindbergh, and Richard Misrach alongside photographs by trailblazing women photographers including Rineke Dijkstra, Candida Höfer, Nan Goldin, and Laurie Simmons.
