Ominous Land: Philip Guston’s Striking Depiction of Injustice

NEW YORK | 18 NOVEMBER 2021

Totally disillusioned by the restrictive dogma of abstract expressionism, Philip Guston abandoned the gestural flourishes and replaced them with stylistically bold and symbolically charged figurative paintings, like that of Ominous Land. On this episode of Expert Voices, Elizabeth Webb gives us a glimpse into the brooding mind of Philip Guston and his work Ominous Land. In this piece, Guston’s portrays the horrible cruelty of the Klu Klux Klan, having witnessed their marches firsthand. There's so much in this painting that is evocative and immediate to discussions happening today and Guston has inspired new generations of artists who have followed his voice. Ominous Land, from the esteemed collects ion of Gabriele and Robert Lee, will be offered as a highlight of the Contemporary Evening Auction, 18 November.
