Sotheby’s is pleased to exhibit in Hong Kong highlights from its upcoming Paris Important Design and African Art sales. Iconic design pieces by Lalanne and Line Vautrin from a Parisian collects ion alongside with African art pieces from the major collects ion of Marceau Rivière will be on view from March 29 to April 2.

  • Baule mask, Côte d’Ivoire
    Metaphorical symbol of the moon, this round mask belongs to a very rare corpus of artworks appearing at the opening of Baule’s ceremonies. Height of the abstraction of human figure, the face is part of a perfect circle which respond, in echo, the half circles of the hair, the eyebrows and the eyes in a perfectly balanced shape. This mask illustrates the individual genius of an artist who knew how to draw in traditional repository of Baule’s art to create a t.mes less masterpiece.

  • Ysaure mask, Côte d’Ivoire
    Characteristic of Baule art, this work stands out as one of the masterpieces of the corpus of ndoma portrait masks. Closing the entertainment ceremonies, they magnified all the criteria of the Baule beauty whose treatment is here extremely meticulous. The finesse of the features of the face responds to the delicacy of the openwork headdress surmounted by a comb with four branches and stylized beard. Added nails and triangles of brass - substitute of gold - which magnify the quality of the sculpture.

    Major work of Dan art, this anthropomorphic spoon is the masterpiece of an ensemble already celebrated for its imposing proportions and its formal inventiveness. Symbol of dignity, it personifies feminine beauty, translating to perfection the fundamental criteria of Dan’s aesthetics, both in form and in the care given to the adornment. Transcending the classical characteristics of the corpus, the artist managed here to achieve the perfect balance of the formal relationship between work and object, between statuary and receptacle.

    Major piece of its corpus, this heddle pulley superbly illustrates the essential expression of perfection placed at the heart of Guro art, transcended here by the monumentality of the work. The eloquent beauty uniting the criteria of the Guro aesthetic is reflected here in an intense way: narrow face with high convex forehead, complex hairstyle drawing on the forehead a pattern with serrated arabesque outline, narrow bridge’s nose exalted by the sensitive play of lines stretched towards the open mouth, with teeth delicately carved.
