  Probably the most well-known of the Warhol self portraits of the 1960's and one of the most iconic images of the artist, Self Portrait from 1966 established Warhol as an icon in his own oeuvre giving himself the fame that so intrigued him in his subjects.

  Andy Warhol, Judy Garland and Liza Minelli, 1979

  Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli depicts two seminal stars of the 20^th century, uniting mother and daughter in a single canvas. Warhol and Minnelli met two years before this painting was created, and it was subsequently given as a gift to the star by the artist.

  Andy Warhol, Untitled (Moujik), 1986

  In 1972 Warhol completed a series of paintings of the couturier Yves Saint Laurent and later in 1986 created a series of works showing the designer’s bulldog Moujik. He treats him like one of his human subjects, with this carefully posed image capturing the personality of the animal.

  The Dollar sign is one of the most important of Warhol’s subjects, demonstrating his ability to take an everyday motif and rework for his own purposes. It encapsulates one of Warhol’s ongoing obsessions, namely the American dollar as a signifier of class, wealth and commerce.

  Andy Warhol, Kimiko Powers, 1972

  Warhol had made many portraits of celebrated figures by 1972, but Kimiko Powers was among his first completed commissions. Kimiko’s husband John Powers asked the artist to make these depictions of his wife and it led to a long friendship between Warhol and the couple.

  Candy Darling was an American actress, transsexual icon and one of the Warhol Superstars. The image shows Warhol happy to share the limelight with his peers and is test.mes nt to the collaborative nature of the Factory and its denizens.

  Andy Warhol, Ladies and Gentlemen, 1975

  The Ladies and Gentlemen series depicting New York drag queens are an interesting insight into Warhol’s interest in identity and gender. Unlike many of his works, the subjects are not famous or wealthy but are celebrated and elevated to the same status as his more well-known models.

  In 1969, Cecil Beaton visited Warhol at the Factory towards the end of his career, whilst Warhol was in his ascendance. Known primarily for his photography of the Royal Family and society figures, here, he captures Warhol in a relaxed setting with himself in the background uniting two key tastemakers of the 20^th Century in one image.

  Andy Warhol, Airborne, We Kill For Peace, 1986

  Depicting a phrase associated with the United States Special Forces around the t.mes of the Vietnam War, the source imagery for this work was likely an embroidered patch, and shows Warhol was not afraid to depict contentious subjects in his later paintings, many of which dealt with violence and mortality.

  Andy Warhol, Diamond Dust Candy Box, 1981

  As well as showcasing people, Warhol created many works focussing on banal, everyday objects such as this candy box. However, the artist had long associated his childhood fantasy of unlimited candy with success and these paintings speak to that longing as he glamorises this everyday consumer item.

  Andy Warhol, Flowers, 1964

  Warhol’s early work primarily focused on images in the mass media and on commercial brands until he embarked on his Flowers series. The images were sourced from a spread in a magazine called Modern Photography, which later led to a lawsuit with the creator of the initial source image. From this point on Warhol would use his own photography as inspiration but the Flowers remain a key motif in his oeuvre.

  Andy Warhol, Self Portrait (Fright Wig), 1986

  Unlike the 1960’s Self Portraits which are highly staged and controlled, in this depiction Warhol seems to confront both his ageing and the viewer as he stares out of the canvas with a hypnotic intensity. Created a year before his unt.mes ly death in 1987 this Self Portrait exists as a late masterpiece of Warhol’s art.
