A former Hapsburg palace presents global culture
The Weltmuseum Wien, formerly the Museum of Ethnology, is home to comprehensive collects ions of ethnographic objects, historical photographs, and books on non-European civilizations, making it one of the leading museums of its kind in the world. Its roots can be traced back to 1806, when the Imperial and Royal Ethnographic collects ion was established as part of the Imperial Cabinets of Natural History. Currently residing in the Hofburg Imperial Palace, the Weltmuseum Wien houses more than 400,000 objects from Asia, Africa, the Pacific and America. The collects ion includes an Aztec feathered headdress, objects from James Cook’s collects ion of Polynesian and Northwest Coastal art and artifacts collects ed from the SMS Novara circumnavigation of the globe, alongside 100,000 photographs and 146,000 printed works.
