Smith, dated 7/24/50, which reads, in part: “Although I don’t think this is for MLLE, nor did T think so, yet it is honestly the best story he’s done recently and I wanted you to take a look at it anyway …”, and with a pencil reader’s report, “whether this particular story isn’t a bit too strong for those in less sophisticated areas (and in Catholic schools‚ … believe it or not, there are still a lot of college girls who are utterly naive”, and three Mademoiselle reader’s report forms recording considerable editorial back and forth, responses from Catholic readers, and Smith’s decision, “I think we should buy it. M.G.S.”, with a note of a payment of $750. “House of Flowers” was published in the issue for April 1951, and was winner of the third prize in that year’s O. Henry Awards. The story was adapted into a musical in collaboration with composer and lyricist Harold Arlen, and ran for 165 performances on Broadway in 1954. “House of Flowers” was later collected in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Arthur Addison Bright (1861-1906) was a theatrical agent, most famous for his close friendship with J.M.Barrie, but who also acted for a number of successful playwrights including Arthur Conan Doyle, E.W. Hornung and Stephen Phillips. Bright was more than an agent to Barrie; he was a close friend and confidential adviser and played a key role in persuading Barrie to take up play writing. It was Bright who introduced Barrie to the Broadway producer Charles Frohman, who was ultimately responsible for the production of Peter Pan in Britain and America. In 1906 it was discovered that Bright had embezzled royalties from many of his clients, including Barrie and Arthur Conan Doyle. In spite of the financial loss, Barrie staunchly supported his agent. Bright however, found the prospect of legal proceedings too much to bear and on a trip to Lucerne, ostensibly to take the air, he committed suicide. Barrie wrote a short but loving obituary for Bright, which appeared in the Times on Friday, 1st June, 1906, "To the many to whom the keenly intellectual face and noble character of Arthur Addison Bright were incentives to well-doing, it will come as a painful shock that he died suddenly on Tuesday night... Mr Bright had represented a number of authors besides myself in their affairs of the theatre, and it was owing to his encouragement and zealous help more than any other cause that novelists and poets have of late years produced plays. He was a man of a mind the most catholic and cultured, and so beautiful and modest a nature that it may be said of him, he had never time to be much interested in himself, he was so interested in his friends. For many years he had been my most loved friend." The&nbsp;Little&nbsp;White&nbsp;Bird&nbsp;introduces Peter Pan as a magical baby who escapes from being human as an infant, and flies around Kensington Gardens with fairies. This episode, which began as a single chapter, grew into an "elaborate book within a book" as Barrie worked on the novel. Seeing the appeal of the character, Barrie developed Peter Pan into a play first performed in 1904, and following its outstanding success, published a slightly expanded version of the Peter Pan chapters as a single work, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, published in 1906, with illustrations by Arthur Rackham.

The remaining copies were perhaps bound in the same proportion.&nbsp; In his "Huck Finn among the Issue-Mongers," Kevin MacDonnell has shown that there are only three points which distinguish the first printing from the second printing of 10,000 copies:&nbsp; "the plates were corrected to reflect three changes in the text: at page 13 the erroneous page reference '88' was changed to '87'; at page 57 the misprint 'with the was' was corrected to 'with the saw'; and at page 9 the misprint 'Decided' was corrected to 'Decides.'" Our copy exhibits all three first printing points. The Uncle Silas plate at page 283, which was defaced at some point during the printing, is here in its first state. As for the other points enumerated by Blanck and Johnson, they derived from corrections made to the electrotyped plates during the course of printing and do not indicate a priority of issue. Huckleberry Finn&nbsp;prompted Hemingway to state: “All modern literature comes from one book by Mark Twain. It’s the best book we’ve had. All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing since.”

It was a sudden and direct way of getting a song from the writer to any amount of willing singers. A song which appeared in the afternoon might, somewhere, become a rousing anthem on that very same evening." — John Kelly With the possible exception of the field efforts of Alan Lomax, arguably no one did more to preserve American folk music than Sis Cunningham and her rag-tag zine Broadside. Issued in its first decade on a mimeograph "discarded by the American Labor Party" (Cohen 11) out of Cunningham's NYC apartment, Broadside ran for more than 25 years, focusing less on the more anthropological folk covered by competitors like Sing Out! and more on the increasingly countercultural and topical folk arising out of the Village. She later described the vivid scene: "For years Broadside operated on a shoestring. The people who helped us financially were the Seegers, Pete and Toshi. They contributed thirty-five dollars weekly to cover the cost of paper, envelopes, cans of mimeograph ink, and, in the very beginning, postage [...] Our office was the small front room of the low-income project apartment in which we lived [...] This room was also where we ate our meals; we cleared the dirty dishes off the table and went to work cutting stencils on a manual Underwood typewriter [...] When the time came, we set up the mimeo machine, a hand-cranked one [...] [a] friend coming back from Cuba said [... it] was exactly the same model as the one Castro had in the Sierra Maestra" (275). Broadside would most significantly introduce Bob Dylan to the larger folk community, publishing him in their first issue ("Talking John Birch") — the singer's first appearance in print anywhere. Perhaps most importantly, it printed his "Blowin' in the Wind" in their sixth issue, predating not only the song's release on The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan the following year, but even the song's recording (in July of 1962). Dylan would go on to appear more than two dozen times over the magazine's first decade. Other contributors across the run include Phil Ochs, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, Martin Luther King, Theodore Bikel, Malvina Reynolds, Vanessa Redgrave, and Richard Farina. Printings for these early issues were small (usually around 300), and distribution spotty. Early issues are scarce, and substantive sets rare. A nearly complete run of the most important years of this important music publication.

Christian legends and European folktales of St. Nicholas had existed before, but Moore's imagery — helped along in the 1860s by Thomas Nast's iconic illustrations — gave us the Santa Claus that children recognize today: jolly and plump, wearing a red suit with white fur trim. First published in 1823 in the Troy Sentinel in New York, the poem became a popular inclusion in newspapers throughout the 1820s. However, these publications were anonymous; it was not until the poem's publication in 1837 anthology (The New York Book of Poetry) that it was attributed to Clement Moore. Clement himself did not claim it directly in print until this 1844 collection: "his first public acknowledgment of authorship" of the poem (Marshall, 10). A major edition of a cultural touchtone, scarce inscribed.

According to Baum bibliographer Bienvenue, there were five major printings of this title; the first printing, as here, is quite scarce on the marketplace today — and in fact, scarcer than the first/first of the book's legendary predecessor, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Born into the prominent Cunard shipping family, she rejected aristocratic convention and immersed herself in the artistic circles of London and Paris. In the late 1920s, she founded the Hours Press, publishing innovative writers such as Samuel Beckett and Ezra Pound. Her most significant achievement was editing the Negro Anthology (1934), a groundbreaking 900-page collection documenting Black culture, history, and oppression across the diaspora. Cunard was a committed anti-fascist, campaigning actively during the Spanish Civil War and speaking out against racism in Europe and America. The Flemings were known to have attended parties hosted and including Cunard in the 1950s-60s.

In this version, after the witches are defeated, he and his grandmother use the Grand High Witch’s machine to find and eliminate witches world-wide, accepting his short mouse life-span to continue the fight. This is a variation of the book’s original, darker ending, which differs from the happier conclusion of the 1990 movie adaptation.

M. Forster</a>, accompanied by a handwritten letter from Forster.<ul><li>E.M. Forster (English).</li><li>London: Edward Arnold, 1908.</li><li>Bound in publisher’s original maroon cloth boards.</li></ul> Accompanying the book is a poignant single sided hand written letter from E. M. Forster, addressed, West Hackhurst, Abinger Hammer, Dorking (Surrey), 18th October 1946, to Miss. Jordan, evidently a veterinary surgeon. In the letter, Forster states, that he should be ‘…glad if you would come over one day in the early half of next week, and put our dear old cat away´. He explains that Wednesday would be the best day, or if not Tuesday (´…but in no case later than Wednesday´) and further remarking that, ´He is quite happy and cheerful, and I don’t want to upset him by a journey to Dorking, so please will you bring the necessary apparatus with you´. From 1925 until his mother, Alice Clare, died at age 90 on 11th March 1945, Forster lived with her in Abinger Hammer at West Hackhurst, the house designed by his father, the architect Eddie Morgan Forster, and previously occupied by his aunt Laura. Forster left the property for Cambridge in November 1946, the month after the present letter was written, as the landlord refused to renew the lease. The letter is in very good condition and a marvelous accompaniment to Forster’s classic novel.
