Burden) The first of De Bry's series of great and small voyages, this book is particularly important for its content on the lives of the Native American populations of Virginia and North Carolina in the late 16th century as recorded by a key member of an early expedition. Thomas Hariot, an English polymath fluent in Carolina Algonquin, penned the text on a voyage to Roanoke Island in 1585-6, including direct observations of the Indigenous populations' living arrangements, farming, fishing, and traditional practices. The text is accompanied by illustrations originally made by John White, a member of the same expedition and later famous for his discovery that the colony of Roanoke had vanished — the very colony described in detail here by Hariot. Copies of De Bry's voyages are known for causing "the greatest confusion of bibliographers" and "the despair of collectors" (Church, vol 1, 317) owing to their typically mixed and/or incomplete states. The first and second issues of part one of the voyages were issued in the same year and are largely uniform with only minor differences in the position of the text. As with the vast majority of known copies, the present copy contains plates from both issues, with six plates from the first issue and six from the second (where there are issue points to distinguish them; the remaining 19 plates are identical between issues), as well as a mix of the first two text issues and the map in its second state (as usual) as identified by Burden. Though lacking some leaves, this copy retains its complete set of the Native American plates, arguably the most important and informative part of the entire De Bry series, and the stellar map of Virginia. A foundational book for collectors of Americana.

This publication by the Survey of India Office includes a useful ‘References’ key giving information on the differing gauges in use across the region, and a color code highlighting the lands under direct British administration in pink, ‘Tributary States’ in yellow and ‘Independent and Foreign Possessions’ in Green. A notice records the price for color as ‘Five Rupees’, as against ‘Four Rupees’ without. Prepared under the direction of Colonel Henry Ravenshaw Thuillier, who as his father before him, served as Surveyor General of India from 1887 to 1895. Here Baluchistan is shown as an enclave of the British Raj. This strategically important territory lies in modern-day Pakistan, and is situated around the natural fort town of Quetta located high in the Chiltan mountains. It came under direct British rule in 1876, securing the vital Bolan Pass though which British troops under the command of General Michael Biddulph passed during the Second Anglo-Afghan War of 1878 to 1880. The railway connecting the remote province to the Raj proper was built through the pass in 1887. The map also contains an early route highlighted in crayon showing a journey by sea to Bombay, and thence via Daman to the Indian Princely State of Baroda. Other towns underlined in crayon include Kurrachee, Lingsugur, Raichur, and Hyderabad.

It places emphasis on the post roads, which would have been the main lines of communication for the occupying army. At the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars the Polish people saw Bonaparte as the best chance for them to regain their country after the three Partitions inflicted on them by Austria, Russia and Prussia. Polish Legions fought with the French in Europe, Egypt and the West Indies, and were rewarded with the creation of the Duchy of Warsaw in 1807. However, as Napoleon's army fled from Moscow, the Russians followed, overrunning the Duchy and occupying it until the Congress of Vienna (1815) divided it between Russia and Prussia.

During the course of this map's life Jaillot had three pairs of plates engraved, with only minor changes. This is the second state of the second pair, with the lines of longitude and latitude that were added in the first year of issue. The third state has the date 1696. A very decorative map, with fine baroque title and scale cartouches and an inset of the Orkneys and Shetland Isles.

A wall map of Europe according to the Congress of Vienna.<ul><li>Maximilian De Traux (Austrian).</li><li>Carte Générale et Itinéraire de L'Europe Divisée en Tous les États d'après le Congrèss sw Vienne &amp; autres traités postérieurs.</li><li>Vienna: Artaria &amp; Comp., 1818.</li><li>Original color.</li><li>Dissected and laid on linen in nine sections as issued.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> A large and detailed wall map, depicting the boundaries of Europe as settled by the Congress of Vienna (1814-5), settling the changes caused by the Napoleonic War. Besides these borders this map is interesting for its depiction of the coach roads and use of hachuring to display relief. Maximilian de Traux (c.1765-c1830) was a colonel of the Austrian military engineers. From 1803 he was active in Dalmatia, improving the defenses of Zadar, but also surveying Dalmatia (with a map published 1810) and its cities.

The inset shows Kharg Island, the site of a Dutch trading port from 1753-1766, off Bandar Rig in Persia. Après de Mannevillette (1707-1780), made a voyage to China in 1728, using new instruments to correct the latitudes of places en route. He then compiled a new sea atlas, Le Neptune Oriental, with much-corrected charts. However the Persian Gulf was not a welcoming place for European ships: the Arabian coast is marked 'peu connu' (little known).

An important 16th century plan of Moscow.<ul><li>Frans Hogenberg (Belgian).</li><li>Georg Braun (German).</li><li>Moscauw.</li><li>Cologne: circa 1575.</li><li>Latin text edition. </li><li>Colored.</li><li>This map is presented unframed.</li></ul> A fine example of this 'map-view' of Moscow, published in the second volume of the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the first systematic atlas of town plans. The major buildings are shown in profile, with no consideration for perspective. On the frozen river Mosca are skaters and horse-drawn sledges and in the foreground are soldiers on horseback.&nbsp; This is the first of the two plans of Moscow issued by Braun and Hogenberg. A second appeared in the last volume, published in 1618, necessitated by Ladislas of Poland, who rampaged through the city in 1611.

Antonio de Sancha,&nbsp;1776.&nbsp;</li><li>Octavos.</li><li>Three parts in two volumes, each with their own title pages, part one with an additional half-title.</li><li>Includes an engraved portrait, folding map of Chile, and 3 plates.</li><li>Bound in contemporary full vellum with gilt border, two black labels to each spine, lettering in gilt.</li><li>Housed in a brown cloth-covered slipcase, black label with gilt titling.</li></ul> Robert Southey's name and 1796 written on the verso of the ffep of each volume, with a trimmed version of Southey's bookplate on volume one. The bookplate was added around 1813, since Thomas Bewick did not fulfill the commission from Southey until 7 August 1813, upon which it was laid into every book in Southey's personal library. Volume two includes a four-line pencil provenance, stating it was bought from a bookseller in New York City, June 1871, and signed J. W. Dodd.

Iceland is shown with erupting volcanos and the mythical island of Frisland is shown.

The famous fantasy map of Asia as Pegasus.<ul><li>Heinrich Bünting (German).</li><li>Asia Secunda pars Terrae in Forma Pegasir.</li><li>Hanover: 1581. </li><li>Woodcut. </li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> A fantasy map depicting Asia as Pegasus, the winged horse of Perseus. The head is Turkey and Armenia, the wings Scythia and Tartary, forelegs Arabia, hind legs India and the Malay Peninsula. &nbsp;This strange map appears in Bünting's Itinerarium, in which the author, a theologian, rewrote the Bible as a travel book, with other fantasy maps including the World as a cloverleaf and Europe as the Virgin Mary. Although the title and text under the map are in Latin, the text on verso is German.

It was published in the 'Novus Atlas Sinensis', the first Western atlas of China, which contained maps supplied by Martino Martini, the Jesuit missionary who travelled through China 1643-1650.&nbsp; &nbsp;The large title cartouche features the Emperor and Empress and two exotic Chinese pheasants.

A 17th century colored, paneled map of the Holy Land.<ul><li>Jan Jansson (Dutch).</li><li>Palestina sive Terrae Sanctae Descriptio.</li><li>Amsterdam: Jan Jansson van Waesberge, c.1677.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> An example of one of the most decorative maps of the Holy Land, based on Adrichom and orientated with north to the left, with 18 inset scenes from Genesis, Exodus &amp; Numbers, and a nineteenth depicting Jesus approaching Jerusalem on the donkey. This map did not appear in many atlases, supplanted by Henricus Hondius's less decorative but more contemporary map. As this example has no text it is likely to have been published in Georg Horn's atlas of the ancient world, issued by Jansson's son-in-law.
