Thomas Rowlandson enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools at Somerset House, London in 1773, aged just sixteen. A brilliant draughtsman, with a wicked sense of humor, his work focused on the trials and tribulations of both domestic and political life in the age of enlightenment.

The present two drawings are typical; the first depicting the hustle and bustle surrounding the coaching inn at Islington (now in north London, but then just a small village), the second showing travelers passing through a town with a monumental gothic church visible behind. This second work was once owned by Louis Deglatigny (1834-1936), whose collector's mark appears in the lower left corner. Deglatigny was a member of the Chamber of Commerce in Rouen, France, and over-time assembled an important collection of watercolors, engravings and books by Rowlandson.
