This finely painted thangka depicts the 1st Dalai Lama, Gendun Drub (1391-1474), founder of Tashi Lhunpo monastery. He was a devotee of Green Tara, composing significant commentaries and a meditation practice for her.


Another example, part of a set of five, included in the exhibition The World of Mandala - Tamashige Tibet Collection, Okura Museum of Art, Tokyo, cat. no. 22, was sold in these rooms, 19th March 2014, lot 125. It is illustrated on Himalayan Art Resources item no. 31240.
