A thangka depicting Shakyamuni Buddha, Tibet, 17th century

The Buddha with his right hand held in a variant gesture of fearlessness, abhaya mudra, the left resting in his lap in the meditation posture, seated in vajraparyankasana on a lotus pedestal supported by a tiered throne draped with an altar cloth, with a mandala offering before. Ten teaching Buddhas appear in surrounding landscape and clouds above, and wind-horses (Tib. rlung rta) gallop at the shore of a lake below, and a golden inscription in the border beneath.
