The reference 5513, introduced circa 1962, offered a more accessible alternative to the chronometer-certified 5512, sharing its design and attributes while featuring a non-chronometer movement. Rather than replacing the 5512, the 5513 was sold alongside it, quickly becoming a cornerstone of the Submariner line.

This example is fitted with a Meters First matte dial, so called because the depth rating is printed in meters before feet. Produced from the mid-1960s, Meters First dials overlapped with Feet First dials between late 1968 and early 1970, likely reflecting Rolex’s efforts to appeal to the U.S. market, which did not widely use the metric system.

Distinctive features of this dial include semi-open 6’s in the depth rating and the characteristic straight-top ‘S’ in “Submariner.”
