In 2005, A. Lange & Söhne introduced the Langematik Gangreserve for Wempe, a special edition created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Wempe’s Chronometerwerke in Glashütte. The model was produced in platinum, pink gold, and yellow gold, with limited editions of 100 pieces each in platinum and yellow gold. The pink gold version was even more exclusive, produced in just 25 pieces and available exclusively through Wempe’s New York store, which was celebrating its own 25th anniversary at the time.
Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s vision of crafting pocket watches that harmoniously combined precision, functionality, and elegance is clearly reflected in this design. Notably, large observation Clock No. 83193, once supplied to the Zeppelin shipyard in Friedrichshafen, served as a key source of inspiration for the dial of the Langematik Gangreserve, with visual elements and a distinctive layout that were inspired by 19th-century marine chronometers.
When placed within its presentation box, the watch’s design is further enhanced by the thoughtfully conceived display. The present example is accompanied by its original limited-edition presentation box, individually numbered to match the watch itself. The interior beautifully echoes the gimbal-mounted bowls of 19th- and early 20th-century marine chronometers, evoking the characteristic swiveling motion that kept these instruments level at sea.
Through these intricate design elements, Lange pays elegant homage to the legacy of marine chronometry. The result is a timepiece that celebrates the roots of precision timekeeping while embodying the refinement of contemporary horology. It is both a visual delight for connoisseurs and a meaningful tribute to the enduring evolution of watchmaking.
Offered in beautiful condition, the present example represents an exceptional opportunity to own a modern timepiece that eloquently evokes the great traditions of the past.
