In 1966, Dalí created two medals for the "Monnaie de Paris" and started minting his own currency known as the "Dalí d'Or". Representing himself and his wife and muse, Gala, the coins were made over a ten year period in conjunction with Huguenin Frères and had four denominations ranging from half a Dalí d'Or to five Dalí d'Or.

The present model is the result of a collaboration between Yves Piaget and Salvador Dalí. Designed as an overgrown branch encircling a Dali d'Or, one side depicting the faces of Salvador and Gala Dalí, the reverse featuring abstract surrealist motifs.
