The Compagnie des Verreries et Cristalleries de Baccarat debuted this innovative new technique of decoration at the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris, when the manufacturer included a large blue punch service in their display. The service survives today in the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, acc. no. 67.3.41, illustrated in Jane Shadel Spillman, Glass from the World’s Fairs – 1851-1904, Corning Museum of Glass, exh. cat., 1986, p. 23, fig. 8. The technique was also used to decorate bottle coolers with classical figures, and examples are recorded in blue, pink and amber-coloured glass.
