Nicolas Hertaut received master woodmaker in 1753

Nicolas Heurtaut was initially trained in sculpture and in 1742 entered the Académie de Saint-Luc, working for renowned woodmakers such as the Tilliard brothers, before becoming a master woodmaker in 1753.

This sofa is typical of his stylistic evolution in the 1760s, when lines and structures became lighter and the rich rocaille carving gave way to simpler floral decorations. It is very similar to a corner sofa offered for sale by Replica Shoes ’s Monaco, on December 14, 1996, lot 57.
