These bookcases are characteristic of the Empire period, with the use of mahogany prized by the Emperor, a simple and utilitarian form, and the presence of a few gilt-bronzes from the neoclassical vocabulary established by Napoleon I's ornamentalists, Percier and Fontaine. In this case, slender torches, synonymous with knowledge and a masculine attribute, enhance the flamed colour of the mahogany. This sobriety is found in many bookcases, for example a two-door mahogany bookcase kept at the Mobilier National (inv. GME 16778).
