Long. 24.5 cm; Height 9⅝ in.

The peacock is a symbol of peace, prosperity, and beauty in Chinese art. For Westerners, peacocks are associated with immortality and fertility, as the bird sheds its feathers, which then grow back. Louis XIV owned several specimens in the Versailles menagerie, as did Empress Josephine at her Malmaison estate in the early 19th century. Chinese porcelain depicting peacocks is therefore highly prized by collectors, and dealers often embellished them with gilt-bronze mounts to modernize them. For a pair of candelabra with peacocks in Arita porcelain and gilt-bronze mounts from the Louis XV period, see the Replica Shoes 's Paris , 6 May, 2015, lot 179.
