Among the most original and desirable of Paris gold
boxes are those which incorporate original panels of
Japanese or Chinese lacquerwork. The Livre Journal of
Lazare Duvaux lists several boxes with lacquer panels
mounted by Jean Ducrollay for illustrious clients such as
Madame de Pompadour. Some bijoutiers chose to cut
the lacquer to fit currently fashionable forms whereas
others preferred to change the form to fit the shape of the lacquer, as in the case of the present very early example. For another gold-mounted lacquer box of the same shape and same date, see Christie's Paris, Collection Bayreuth, 22 November 2023, lot 22.
