The painting Sun and Clouds over Hong Kong was executed after the artist's stay in Hong Kong, where he had been invited to undertake an artist residency by the British Council of Hong Kong. Jacklin stayed there for three months, prior to Hong Kong's return of sovereignty under Chinese rule. This painting was later completed from drawings and pastels that he had made on site.
