Ellen L. Vanderveer was born to parents David R. Vanderveer and Eliza Holmes Ellis in February 1816. Her father was a farmer and raised peaches, hence she holds a peach. Ellen married Jacob Covenhoven (1810- 1846) on June 15, 1836 at the age of 20, and died ten years later on September 24, 1846 in labor with her fourth child. Her child died two months later in November and her husband Jacob died in December 1846, three months after his wife.
