Lot Details

Description

modelled with linked arms beside a tree stump, taking shelter beneath her billowing striped cloth, factory mark impressed and in underglaze blue

height 17 cm; 6 3/4

Acquired by the parents of the present owners in the 1990s.

Paul et Virginie was a popular love story by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, first published in 1788 ad purportedly a favourite of Napoleon Bonaparte. The model is very similar to a design by jean-Baptiste Huet which was reproduced on jouy cotton manufactured by Christophe-Phillipe Oberkampf in circa 1802.
