Covered bowls of this charming form were produced at kilns sites across Song and Jin dynasty China, but were likely first developed at the famous Ding kilns of Hebei province. Compare a closely related covered bowl from the Ding kilns, preserved in the British Museum, London (accession no. 1936,1012.265), dedicated by painted inscription in accordance with 1162 CE but possibly earlier in production, in R. L. Hobson, The George Eumorfopoulos Collection, vol. III, London, 1926, cat. no. C.136, pl. 28; another Ding example exhibited at the Ausstellung Chinesischer Kunst, Akademie der Künste, Berlin, 1929, cat. no. 603, later sold in our London rooms, 24th May 1955, lot 144; and an example in Jingdezhen porcelain – likely of similar Qingbai glaze – uncovered from the tomb of Wang Geng, dated to 1200, illustrated in Liu Tao, Dated Ceramics of the Song, Liao and Jin Periods, Beijing, 2004, p. 99, fig. 7-3.
