十八 / 十九世紀 藏傳木加彩曼陀羅紋小方桌
The mandala depicts a flaying knife (kartrika) and skull bowl (kapala) at the centre, possibly representing the wrathful guardian Mahakala, see Robert Beer, The Encyclopedia of Tibetan Symbols and Motifs, Boston, 1999, p. 266. The mandala palace is encircled by the Eight Charnel Grounds, with entrails and kapala filled with blood and offerings at each corner. The mandala is painted on cloth, laid down on the wood table and shellacked to protect the surface while in ritual use. Compare an 18th or 19th century mandala table in Huntington and Bangdel, The Circle of Bliss: Buddhist Meditational Art, Columbus and Serindia, 2003, cat. no. 119.
