4to (267 x 212 mm). Half-title, 3 folding engraved charts and maps by T. Bowen after Forster; occasional pale spotting. Contemporary diced calf with gilt fillet border, flat spine gilt-ruled and -titled, marbled endpapers, yellow edges; neat repairs to spine, bookplate removed from front pastedown.

First edition in English. This work is a valuable account of the numerous expeditions for the discovery of the Northwest and Northeast Passages. As well as the English voyages there are also separate sections dealing with Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Danish and Russian expeditions.
