Born in New Rochelle, New York, in 1902, Virginia Berresford studied with Amédée Ozenfant in Paris before returning to live full-time in New York in 1934. Berresford enjoyed near immediate success early in her career. At twenty five, she had her first solo exhibition at Gallerie Bernheim-Jeune in Paris and a few years later in 1930 she was featured in The Museum of Modern Art’s An Exhibition of Work of 46 Painters & Sculptors Under 35 Years of Age.
Berresford was also a successful art dealer and became the first individual to open a commercial gallery in Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard in 1954. Her works are included in the permanent collections of institutions including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Dallas Museum of Art.
