Shafic Abboud (1926-2004) is one of Lebanon’s most important 20th-century artists. Abboud and Raza met in the early 1950s while studying at the École Nationale des Beaux-Art in Paris, and the young artists struck up a close friendship. They maintained correspondence for many years, and the painters are both remembered for their melding of abstraction with inspiration from their respective homelands.
