framed: 43 ½ by 35 ¼ in.; 110.5 by 89.5 cm.

This elegantly attired raven-haired sitter wears a crimson velvet gown and wide-brimmed black hat decorated with a matching red tassel. A gold cross hangs around her neck and a large ruby jewel peeks out from beneath her chapeau. Margaret Carpenter drew artistic inspiration from Sir Thomas Lawrence, from whose pictorial tradition this stylish portrait clearly derives.
