Monogrammist HVH

The Netherlands active 17th century

Still life with Grapes, Two Apricots, and a Peach on a Stone Ledge

oil on panel

panel: 7 ½ by 11 ⅜ in.; 19.1 by 28.9 cm.

framed: 17 by 20 ⅞ in.; 43.2 by 53.0 cm.

This intriguing still life was painted in the late seventeenth century by an as-yet unidentified Dutch artist with the monogram HVH. The intimate scale and direct presentation of the objects evoke the style of Adriaen Coorte (c. 1665 – after 1707) , whereas the bunch of volumetric grapes are strongly reminiscent of David Cornelisz de Heem (1663 - before 1714).

While the identity of the monogrammist remains inconclusive, the painter of this charming still life is perhaps the enigmatic and chameleonic Hendrick van Heemskerck (c.1630 - 1683/4), known only from a few surviving works.1

We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer for his assistance in the cataloguing of the present lot.
