Jacopo Vignali renders this lyrical nocturnal scene with painterly brushwork and dramatic lighting effects. The work dates to the late 1620s, following the artist's visit to Rome, and is contemporaneous with his richly chromatic Circumcision of 1637, produced for the Church of the Misercordia in San Casciano.
