The size, embellishment and proportions place this pair of andirons at the pinnacle of the form during the Federal period. A closely related pair are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. no. 60.58.1) and the Pendleton Collection at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum (acc. no. 04.1974) (Luke Vincent Lockwood, The Pendleton Collection, (Rhode Island School of Design, 1904), p. 132).
