The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 14800 was introduced in 1992, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the first luxury stainless steel watch, a model that had revolutionized the horological industry.
Not only the 14800 marked an anniversary, but it is also a milestone in the history of the Royal Oak.
Indeed, that reference was the first Royal Oak fitted on a leather strap. At the time, this project was very controversial, to a point where the design had to be developed externally.
The celebrated independent Swiss designer Jörg Hysek, who is also famous for creating the Vacheron Constantin 222 in 1977, was chosen for this challenge.
The experience of the veteran designer allowed him to play with the rigid codes of Gerald Genta while respecting the essence of piece.
The most striking difference is the more rounded semi-hooded lugs. They both evoke the original design while giving a new dynamic to the case. It cleverly allows an harmonious transition from the case to the strap.
This particular 14800 is fitted with a grey and light-blue mother-of-pearl dial. It was especially requested by the original owner, a close friend of the Audemars Piguet management.
At the time Audemars Piguet did not fit Royal Oaks with such dials and the owner was told that making one had been a challenge and that they failed several times before making this one fitted on this lot. As such, this piece might be the very first Royal Oak with a mother of pearl dial!
