Maximi Tyrii philosophi Platonici sermones sive disputationes XLI. Ex Cosmi Paccii archiepiscopi Florentini interpretatione, ab Henrico Stephano quamplurimis in locis emendata. [Geneva]: Henri Estienne, 1557
The first printing of the Greek text, accompanied by a reprint of the 1517 Latin translation by Cosimo Pazzi, which, however, did not meet with Henri Estienne's approval.
The first owner of this book, Johann Caspar Wolf (1525/1532-1601), succeeded Conrad Gesner as town physician of Zurich, inherited Gesner's estate and purchased his library.
The second owner, Johannes Arcerius Theodoretus also had a significant library, including books from Erasmus's library, and the sixth-century manuscript from Bobbio of the Corpus agrimensorum romanorum (now in Wolfenbüttel).
2 parts in one volume, 4to (170 x 107 mm). Greek and roman type, 30 lines plus headline. collation: *4 a-q8 r4; A-X8: 136 + 168 leaves. Woodcut Estienne device on title-pages, first title-page with some letters outlined in red, both devices coloured (the head on the second device overpainted with a wolf's head), other initials and manicules in red. (Head of first title-page excised.)
binding: Contemporary vellum gilt (178 x 118 mm), central oval interlaced stamp, single gilt fillet border, flat spine with single gilt fillet bands and title lettered in ink, foredge flap with lettering across flaps, stubs from two pairs of (green?) ties. (Binding lightly soiled.)
provenance: Joh. Casparius Wolphius, presumably Caspar Wolf (1525/1532-1601), early inscription on flyleaf — Johannes Arcerius Theodoretus (1538-1604, of Franeker, professor of Greek), inscription in Greek on title-page — note in Latin on flyleaf referencing Weigel (bookseller in Leipzig), "Weigel no.5069 4 Thlr" [i.e. 4 Thaler] — small ink stamp with initials KW on flyleaf — Carrez, name on flyleaf — Librairie Paul Jammes, catalogue 236 (Paris, [1980]), item 151. acquisition: Purchased in 1998 from Bernard M. Rosenthal, San Francisco. references: GLN 2041 & 2042; Schreiber, Estiennes 141; USTC 450461 & 450462
