The Majalis al-‘Ushshaq (‘Assemblies of Sufi Lovers’) was compiled between 1503 and 1504 at the Timurid court of Sultan Husayn at Herat (r.1469-1506). The text deals with crossing the bridge of material love in order to attain ideal love through accounts of famous mystics, legendary lovers and royal princes, including Sultan Husayn himself (Uluç 2000, p.567). The present leaf depicts a dervish taking the son of Ibrahim ibn Adham, an eighth century ruler of Balkh, to meet his father at the Ka’ba.
