Zoomorphic incense burners were popular in the twelfth century, most commonly in the form of felines. Horse-form incense burners are less common. Another complete example is in the David Collection, Copenhagen (inv. no.33/2202, Meyer 2015, pp.26-27, no.5). Like that example, the artist has imbued the horse with a sense of realism and vitality, with great attention to detail. The pricked ears are heightened by incised scrolls, as are the trappings leading to a pointed arabesque terminal.
